What with the whole nineties revival thing making itself known with the resurgence of Doc Martens, crop tops, and Clintons in the White House, it seems like a brand new girl power trend might not be far behind. Kiki Smith has long been a champion of feminine awareness and is known for incorporating social and political themes in her work. She provides a post-feminist argument, acknowledging femininity without overdoing it.

Smith continues her feminist heritage with a new installation titled Sojourn at the Brooklyn Museum. Sojourn was inspired in part by a quotidian needlepoint from 1783, Prudence Punderson’s “The First, Second, and Last Scenes of Mortality.” The handwork highlights the stages of a feminine life, while mysteriously sidestepping domestic scenes and children.

Visitation of the Bird I, 2007 Ink, graphite, colored pencil, mica, glitter and collage on Nepal paper 87" x 85" (221 cm x 215.9 cm) Photo by: Ellen Labenski/ Courtesy PaceWildenstein, New York © Kiki Smith, Courtesy PaceWildenstein, New York

Opening this Friday at the Sackler Center for Feminist Art in the Brooklyn Museum, Sojourn is a site-specific installation incorporating elements of sculpture, casts, photographs and works on paper. The show will also snake into adjacent period rooms nearby.

Like the needlepoint, Smith’s art is about process with more attention paid to cycles and creation than to a particular medium. In an interview with the curator of the museum, Katherine Morris, the artist commented, the work was like “making a model for being an artist.”

Sojourn opens February 12 and runs through September 21 at
The Brooklyn Museum
200 Eastern Parkway
Brooklyn, New York

Can’t make it to London for fashion week? Well we hope you saved those Avatar 3-D glasses because Burberry is leading the fashion meets technology pack with a great leap forward. The iconic Brit label is live streaming in 3-D its upcoming fall 2010 runway show, and for those in a major fashionable city, there will be specially hosted parties to celebrate on a global scale.

” We are very excited to announce that we are hosting the first ever truly global fashion show. We will be simultaneously live streaming our show using 3D technology directly to New York, Paris, Dubai, Tokyo and LA. This unprecedented event will enable people to experience the energy and atmosphere of this show from around the world,” says Christopher Bailey, Burberry’s Chief Creative Officer.

“3D technology will bring our global audience into the London show space allowing them to see the colours and fabrics, to hear the music and to be a part of that moment when it all finally comes together,” Bailey added.

Here are the worldwide locations:

NEW YORK 3D live streaming event at Skylight studios

PARIS 3D live streaming event hosted with concept store, colette

DUBAI 3D live streaming event at The Address

TOKYO 3D live streaming to La Fabrique for ”Burberry Night”

LOS ANGELES* 3D streaming event hosted by Tina Brown, editor of The Daily Beast

For those still stuck in the two-dimensional world (or far from one of the cities above), not to worry. There will be good ol’ 2-D streaming via Burberry’s website come show time.

Tough times have created some interesting reactions. Some have gone the way of mass market via collaborations with giant retailers, but a pleasantly surprising craft movement is giving us something inspiring to write about. Hermosa Beach-based Yuki Matsuda’s Yuketon is an homage to leather craft. With handmade footwear and accessories sourced from U.S. leather artisans far and wide, the collection has that “Red Wing” utilitarian sensibility but with an extra touch that can only be said for expertise married with an eye for design. Now the collection is getting some well-deserved attention across the pond. Dover Street Market in London is the latest to pick up the label. We’re just championing for a women’s collection.

Remember those reports that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were kaput? Think again. The pair was spotted putting on a major PDA show in pal Paul Allen’s luxury suite at the Superbowl in Miami, putting to rest the pesky rumors of a break up. Brad flew from LA to Miami on Saturday afternoon with their son Maddox. But Angie wasn’t far behind she arrived on Sunday and went to the big game as well. And during the Saints and Colts face-off, Angie couldn’t keep her hands off her man! “They were holding hands the entire time, and she kept stealing kisses,” says a witness. “They were all over each other during the whole game.’ But was it all for show? Angie is notoriously image-savvy, and even sued the British newspaper News of the World for reporting that she and Brad were busy dividing their assets and prepping for a split.

But, as our favorite Stockholm based recording artist keeps giving up free music, we feel its our duty to pass it on to you. Taken by Trees (née Victoria Bergsman) has a long history of recording with top indie groups and amazing projects. Her latest album East of Eden is no disappointment to her rich history. When I listen to Taken by Trees I can imagine walking through yellow and red desert cliffs smelling nothing but night-blooming Jasmin and far off campfires.

In the age of Google Earth, Sanzhi, Taiwan has become best known for a project that was never completed: On the shore of this sleepy township is an abandoned 1980s resort referred to as “Sanzhi pod village.” Via satellite, the pods appear as bundles of cheerful candy pastilles, pink and blue apartments stacked on top of each other. In person — and as captured by photographer Magda Biernat in Continental Bounce, on show through March 2 at Soho’s Clic Gallery — you can see paint peeling from the pods, the broken floor-to-ceiling windows gawping over a planned swimming pool that now resembles a swamp. After years of neglect and coastal weather, the complex conveys something like a post-apocalyptic tourist resort from the latest sci-fi flick.

Including Sanzhi, Biernat visited 17 places over the course of a year, taking photos of ghost town buildings in New Zealand, a solo yurt in Mongolia, and pink tipi-style houses in Namibia.

“It was supposed to be my 30th birthday present; I wanted to go around the world,” says Biernat, who is originally from Poland and now lives in New York. She and her husband based where they wanted to travel on places where they hadn’t yet been.

“All we knew were countries [we wanted to go to]. Then inside, basically we were doing a lot of couch-surfing,” Biernat says. “We stayed with local people, and they told us about these places.”

In Taiwan, Biernat and her husband stumbled upon another future-themed village an hour from Sanzhi; several photos of “Green Bay Resort” also made it into Continental Bounce. For the couple’s travels in Kenya, an acquaintance in the U.S. suggested they stay with his family in a Masai village.

One critic described the colors in Biernat’s photographs as “ripe,” and looking for where these vegetal and flower-bright tones appear in similar combinations, in very different parts of the world, is a satisfying game. And the shapes, too: photographs of two gas stations, in Coober Pedy, Australia and the Gobi Desert, Mongolia, are presented side-by-side like long-lost twins.

An architectural photographer whose work has appeared in magazines such as Metropolis and ELLE Decor, Biernat focused on living spaces without their inhabitants for the bulk of this exhibition, which is her first solo show in New York. A grid of smaller photos — each one slightly bigger than a square of chocolate — feature some of the Chinese guards and Masai warriors she encountered.

“I never considered myself a ‘people photographer,’ but during the trip, we met so many amazing people, it was hard not to take their photographs,” says Biernat. She adds, “The end picture, it seems, the people themselves are like structures.”

Biernat is now working on a more localized project. As part of her MFA at Transart Institute, through Donau-Universität Krems in Austria, she is documenting how people’s apartments illustrate their cultural identities in her adopted hometown, post-recession New York.
